Julian West

Julian leads our initiatives to improve community college student completion and equity. Based in Bakersfield, he helps support guided pathways and institutional redesign efforts at colleges across California.

Julian brings experience in educational leadership, advising, and instruction focused on equity and closing achievement gaps. At Bakersfield College, he served most recently as an educational advisor and as a member of the college’s Guided Pathways Implementation Committee and its GP Communications Committee and as an HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) Transfer Liaison and an Umoja Community Advisor. He is an adjunct professor at California State University, Bakersfield, and the University of Phoenix. And he has written and presented widely on topics including improving post-secondary outcomes of Latinx and African-American students and infusing equity in the development and implementation of college and career pathways.

The League for Innovation in the Community College, an international nonprofit, recently recognized Julian for his leadership in developing the African American Mentorship Program at Bakersfield College. He also formed the college’s African American Affinity Group. And he earlier served as sales and marketing director for a private educational services company.

Julian holds a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from CSU Bakersfield, and he is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at CSU San Diego.
