Heather Tirado Gilligan

As a senior communications specialist, Heather writes CLP’s blog and newsletter and manages our social media presence and other communications projects. 

She brings rich and varied experience as an editor and writer, most recently as executive editor of the California Health Report, a nonprofit news site. Previously, she served as a senior editor with Timeline.com and a reporter and senior editor for the California Health Report, and she wrote freelance for a variety of national and regional outlets; her writing has appeared in The Nation, Slate, and The Progressive. 

Heather began her professional life as lecturer and visiting assistant professor at Rutgers University and the University of California at Santa Barbara, and she has freelanced as an editor for academic writers with an emphasis on race and criminal justice. A member of the National Association of LGBT Journalists, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and other organizations, she has been recognized for her radio reporting and her work on health policy.  

She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Maryland, a doctorate in English from Rutgers University, and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley. Heather credits the math and biology courses she took in community college in Maryland for providing the foundation she needed to succeed in the academic and professional worlds. She lives in Oakland with her partner and their daughter.
