Dual Enrollment: Cultivating Equitable Access to Higher Education

Students who participate in high-quality dual enrollment are more likely to graduate, enter and persist in college to completion. Dual enrollment is particularly effective for first-generation, male, and low-income students and students of color. Wheelhouse Center found high school-based, structured dual enrollment in California had smaller racial/ethnic access gaps compared with other types, However, access varies widely by high school (A Foot in the Door, 2021). This session will provide an overview of the various types of dual enrollment, provide research and legislative updates to increase and success in dual enrollment, as well as share some promising practices from partnerships throughout California. Participants in this session will leave with a better understanding of how dual enrollment can be an equity strategy when thoughtfully and intentionally designed.
